Hi Becki...Jennifer's answer is very helpful and correct. To add to her answer here's an instructional video by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine for Feline Health on how to trim your cat's nails: http://www.felinevideos.vet.cornell.edu/trimming_claws/index.shtml This should be done at least every 10-15 days to help keep your cat's claws from becoming too long.

A cat's claws never fully retract. They aren't visible, but they're not way up inside the fingers or anything. The fur just covers them. If the claws are visible when he's walking around, they probably just need to be clipped. Does he catch them on stuff? That's another sign they're too long. Just clip them with nail clippers or claw clippers ( I prefer nail clippers). Be careful not to cut too far... you don't want to cut the qwik (the pink vein that goes part way up the nail). Just clip off the "hook" of the nail.

If he's never had them clipped, you might need someone to hold him while you do it. My cats all let me clip them without problem, but some cats hate it. Good luck.

Cat claws grow just as human fingernails do. You can clip them down with a pair of nail clippers.

Are you sure they are not just too long? sometimes they cannot retract fully if they are long. Do you get them clipped regularly.

If this is not the case, then best go to the vet.
