Are you talking about the Vet Assistant or the Kennel Assistant. The Kennel Assistant takes care of the animals (cats, dogs, etc.) does the laundry, and cleans up. The Vet assistant helps out. It is just another way of being a Vet Tech without being certified. I am a Vet assistant and I do everything the Vet Tech does just I am not certified. I assists vets in the exam rooms, run lab work, pull blood, wrap joints/wounds, fill Rx, answer phones, take care of the animals, prep for sx, restrain animals, give meds, give fluids, run lab work (urin, fecal etc), clean sinks, and do closing duties. I love my job. I first started out as a Kennel Assistant and I worked my way up.

Look at it this way. The stuff the vet does not want to do or have time to do gets turfed to the Vet Tech. When the Vet Tech is too busy and doesn't want to do something...usually involving cleaning something, it goes to the vet assistant...also known as the "kennel person" in many hospitals.

1. Clean dog, cats, rats, mice, snakes, birds, turtles, ferrets, ETC.
2. pick up feces of same
3. clean wounds, perform routine procedures (my friends dog had to have it's "anal gland" voided daily, this was the most disgusting thing I've ever heard of, so he took it to the vet every day and the assistant did it)
4. Clean examining rooms and operating rooms.
5. Accept and deal with dead or dying animals.
6. wear a nice white labcoat and look professional.

Sorry, but the facts of some jobs are not terribly fabulous.

I think kind of what a nurse does in a clinic- weigh the animal, take temp, checks the animal over and also secretarial work, like answering the phone and making appointments.

everything the vet doesnt want to do.... clear anal glands, pick up after the animals, feed them, clean up after surgery.. they are pretty much the maids.... If you want to be a vet get in school and just do it. You will be much happier than an "assistant" or "tech"
