What she is doing is mocking what they do in the wild. When the big cats are through eating, they usually bury the remains to throw off the scent so they wont attract unwanted attention from predators. Shes just following those big cat instincts.

Could be she is trying to bury any leftover food, even if there isn't any. In the wild, cats will bury their food and come back to it later.

My female does that when she doesn'y like the food I put out. Sniffs, then sctatches the floor in a sweeping motion, nose goes up in the air and walks away.

my boy cat does the same thing, and its not just his food. i found it cute, AT FIRST, but now its annoying. Probably following instincts of big cats, burying things. Mine looks like a panther, who knows?

Cats just have a natural instinct to dig and bury things. Do you have enough litter in your litter box? Is it clean? Do you maybe have more than one litter box? Sometimes this behaviour surfaces when they can't dig enough in their litter boxes to satisfy this instinct.

Try giving her another litter box and filling it up with some litter.

I really notice my cats pawing/ digging when I've been neglecting their litter box. After I clean it they quit.

Good luck!

My cat does that if he is unimpressed with what food I have put down for him. He's telling me that it tastes like the contents of his litter box.

My grown cat does that. Its so cute!:) I usually make sure that her eatting place is clean because I use to think she was trying to "clean up", but I believe its from trying to store food.
