That is going to depend on the guys personality. Men fear rejection just as much as women. Only Men are taught to hide their feelings and emotions.
It could be he was shy or had a fear that you would reject him.
It's going to depend on his personality and I am sure as you get to know him that this will change and he will be more of himself around you.
Believe me I have been with my guy for 3 years and he still gets afraid of rejection. Sometimes a little reassurance goes a long way!

I my self a shy guy, i changed into opened to females yet then I replay all what i changed into saying and the SMS I despatched, i realized how stupid and twaddle i changed into .. better of staying quiet that feeling be apologetic about, also maximum of circumstances Iam attracted to a particular lady that i do not even care about the others, It should not be conventional although If it is that severe

Probably both, thats the worst feeling to be rejected especially if your shy because it took him that long to get the courage to talk to you.
