I thought peanut butter lasted forever unopened! I've found that the jars have 'sell by' dates. Does anyone know if you can use the peanut butter past it's sell by date, and how long afterwards? (I have some from Sept. that was never opened...)

If it has been sealed....I am sure it is fine....by law they have to put a date on it....even medicines are good up to 6 months after the expiration date....just use your common sense.

the reason seafood is considered dangerous is because some fish contain mercury. But WIC provides you with peanut butter so I dont think that one is bad. I have never heard that peanut butter is off limits. Google pregnancy do's and donts.

I was at my mom's house and I made my baby a sandwich with the never opened peanut butter she had. It looked good so I made myself one too. It tasted like dust it was sooo nasty. Then I noticed it was expired. (my mom does not believe in expiration dates) I took it away from my baby and threw them in the garbage. Peanut butter is something that should be as fresh as possible. But I'm paranoid now. Good luck there.

I am always leary of things that are past the fresh date. I won't drink milk the day before the date on the carton. I would not use the peanut butter.

EDIT

BTW oils can go rancid and peanut butter is VERY full of fat/oil

you can use it after its sell date ...that doesnt matter as long as its sealed tightly then its fine....although sometimes you'll come accross some bad peanut butter and its easy enough to tell if its bad by the strong smell...and it will taste really funny .

I wouldn't. In the lower 48 states that sort of thing can be classified as beastiality!

Not to mention if someone finds out you will be the brunt of nasty rumors and jokes!

Please don't use it. I personally have never had expired peanut butter, and I never will. Expired food is a no-no, there is reason for expiration dates! PB is cheap, buy a new jar.

I'd use it. As long as there's nothing funky on it. Sept isn't that long ago.

=)

You can eat it but the taste and consistency might change

yeah, it should be fine, you might just have to stir it, as the oils tend to go to the top.
