I agree that for a while there was great emphasis on foreign missions, and we seemed to forget about the people in our own backyard. I fully support missionaries going overseas and reaching people. At least they are doing something about it and we can see the fruit of their labor.
Christians here in America, overall, in my opinion are missionaries to the people around them. The ball was dropped here but I know it is not remaining on the ground. There is a new generation that is picking it up and carrying it.
There are many denominations that are supporting church plants. My husband and I are planting a church. The money we recieved is to get the church off the ground. A lot of it we are putting it back into the community to show God's love in practical ways. We have had such a tremendous and positive feedback.
I don't think we need to neglect one or the other as everyone needs to hear the gospel, but I believe there needs to be balance. The people that aren't called to go overseas, need to be reaching out at home. This is starting to change though, and more believers are doing this.

Most churches fund local and overseas missions. If your church is not helping out people in your community, why don't you bring it up with the church leaders? Or you can look for another church which uses your donations in a fashion you deem appropriate. I personally have no problem with church people using their money to help people outside of their country. If I didn't like what they are doing, I wouldn't give them money. This is why seperation of church and state is a good thing. I HAVE to pay the government taxes, so I DO mind what they are spending it on.

Most churches I know of give tons to their community--food baskets at the holidays, food pantries, free dinners on given days, monetary donations to local causes, rescue missions, clothing drives, etc. Could you cite a specific source?

Your local churches have millions of dollars? What country are you living in, Canada? You've apparently never been to any local church in my general area. Many of them don't even have regular buildings to meet in. They rent space.
All of our local food missions are run by churches. Our food bank recieves tons of donations from local churches. Where would these place be if what you are stating is true?

Many local churches have a community outreach for food and clothing - but here's the catch: you have to come to the church to get it. People who don't believe in God have one less resource available during hard times - although these churches would welcome any atheist who came to them for help.

Because they can't be sure their locals are all followers of their faith. If they give money to overseas missions, it's so those missions can cram their particular brand of Christianity down the throats of the native peoples in whatever country the mission is in.

Because they don't give a crap about you once you join. The Church wants members, once it has them, why should it care about keeping them happy?
