it is completely normal and most dogs do go thru this stage and eventually grow out of it. some dogs eat their own feces for fear of getting into trouble for it. when he goes outside make sure you give him a lot of praise so he knows its okay and dont let it sit around for a long time for him to eat it later on.. pick it up. you should not spank him or yell too much at him when you see him eating his own feces, just a simple no and taking him away from it should let him know not to do it. some say that you can put like chile powder or lemon juice on the feces so the dog will not want to eat it. you just have to see if it will work. some also say the cause for this could be that he is not getting enough nutrients in his daily diet. are you feeding him enough? if you are then i would not worry about it. just know that the dog CAN get serious infections or some kind of disease if you just let him eat it. even though all dogs do it you still need to try your best to prevent it until he grows out of it. there are all kinds of bacteria and parasites in feces and its not good for him to eat it. aslo be careful bc he might eat another dogs feces as well and that is even more dangerous bc if another dog has a disease or a sickness it could get passed on to him thru the bacteria when he eats it.

Dogs are not real bright. They smell the food in the fieces and think it is food. I had a dog that would actully beg for what is scoped out of the litter box.

Alot of puppies and dogs do this for different reasons. If he is going to the bathroom in the house and eating it, then hes most likely doing it, so he does not get into trouble. If he is doing it outside, he is doing it maybe because the area he is going in is dirty, and he does not want to add to the mess. Its very normal for dogs to do this. As he gets older he will stop, to teach him to stop now though, go outside with him, when he is done going to the bathroom clean it up, and take him inside. If he starts to eat it right away tell him no. My dog did this until she was about 10 months old, and we tried everything when it came to pills and powder that you put in their food. And none of that stuff worked.

First thing, clean up the mess, and don't alow him to eat it. Second of all some puppies will eat their poop if their lacking something in their diet. Check with a vet and see what type of food the puppy should be on to get all of his proper nutience....

This is a very common behavior in dogs and puppies. It seems to come from instinct, and perhaps simply the fact that they like it.
A good webpage to stop this behavior is in my source list.

All puppies will do that -- pick it up immediately when he goes or you will be paying Vet bills.

Don't let him do it! What kind of food are you feeding him? Maybe it doesn't have enough nutrients.
