Do pick a color that you love. The best way to help pull everything together is to find a fabric that has the color in it. Look at the other colors that are used in the pattern and use those as you accessory colors, like the drapes, curtains, throw pillows, rugs and throw blankets.
Do take time in finding the things that pull at you. Don't just grab things because you like at that moment on time (for the larger purchases). Take the time to think it over and how you might feel about it in five years.
Do groupings of like things (accessories) in odd numbers. In nature odd numbers are the norm.
Do remember that when you're decorating YOU have to live with it, no matter what anyone else says.

As far as paint goes you get what you pay for.
Never ever ever ever ever use a flat paint I don't care what those designers tell you on tv.
Why: You can't clean flat paint. One coat paint is bese (Dutchboy , which can be found at walmart), Kilz these are great paints.
If your room gets a lot of natural light you a satin finish. Unless you have a lot of children or entertain frequently do a semi-gloss.
If your room has moderate, low to no natural light use a semi to high gloss. Why? because when you turn on the lights and during the day it makes the room appear brighter.
Another thing about Semi-Gloss to High Gloss finishes they are extremely easy to clean. A simple cloth and soap and its done.
Lighting: I suggest pink light bulbs because it give the room a warm feeling (and no it doesn't look pink, like a red light bulb looks red) it bright enough to read in but low enough to hide to make the room feel cozy.

My kids get so annoyed with me, but for me it's "centering" all the pictures and furniture to whatever wall it is on. Like if I have a picture on one side of the wall, there has to be another the same size on the opposite side. Furniture is the same. If I have a sofa in the middle of the wall, there has to be similar size things on either side of it. The only thing that throws me off is windows! I can't believe they are all not centered! I mean, if you put in a window, it should be in the middle of the wall exactly and its not! I can't stand that! But that is just me. It's whatever you like.
