Metabolism has nothing to do with bodyfat.
The word means 'internal body activity', and this can be electrical, physical, chemical or mechanical.
A lot of metabolism happens in your liver, and most of its reactions give off heat (exothermic). Some of these reactions are used routinely to keep the body warm. Fat insulates, so less of the most exothermic reactions will be needed to maintain core temperature.
So in some circumstances, fatter people will have 'slower metabolism' than thinner people, but this is caused BY their bodyfat level.

Some absolute nonsense in previous responses.
Fat people do not have a higher metabolism.
Its also not the case that there is no rule on who has high/low metabolism.
The answer is simple!
Metabolism is indeed affected by your body composition! By body composition, I mean the amount of muscle you have versus the amount of fat.
Muscle uses MORE calories to maintain itself than fat. People who are more muscular (and have a lower percentage of body fat) therefore have a HIGHER metabolism than others that are less muscular.
For example, let's say you have two people who are the exact same height and weight. One exercises on a regular basis with weights, in addition to aerobic exercise, and has a low percentage of body fat. The other never exercises and has a higher percentage of body fat. The first person who exercises will have a higher metabolism than the second person. What this basically means is that person #1's body will use more calories to sustain itself than person #2.
So, if you want to speed up your metabolism, build muscle!
Simple.

well it tends to be that overweight people have to work harder to get around than thin people. more work = more muscle = faster metabolism. it isnt always the case that overweight people have faster metabolisms. id like to add that people with slow metabolisms not only find it easier to put on fat, but also to put on muscle. people with fast metabolisms burn up food quickly so there are less calories to be spend on muscle growth or fat. this is an advantage for people with slow metabolisms. (this doesnt mean if you start putting on muscle it will be progressively hard for you to put on muscle, however.)

I am slightly overweight, i have lots of friends who are overweight, their excuse is usually "It is my metabolism", or something else. But i know the real reason for being overweight is eating too much of the wrong foods, that is what i do, i do not eat much , i nibble at the wrong foods, like chocolate that is my biggest sin. There are people who have thyroid problems it can cause you to battle to lose weight as well as make you lose weight too fast.:)))
