As other responders have told you, it is a system used for restraint. In my opinion, if this is a necessary tool, then your child is likely reacting to the overstimulation of his dental work.
I have an autistic son and he has extreme oral sensitivity and it actually causes him pain to have anything foriegn in his mouth. He also is terrified of anyone touching his mouth and putting things in his mouth.
I saw the pappose system and concluded that this would completely traumatize my son and cause his fear to increase. In my opinion restraining will cause more harm than good because of the psychological effects it will cause, due to the childs complete loss of control over their environment.
I would call the dentist and ask about sedation as an alternative. I would much rather my son have an afternoon of being groggy than a traumatizing memory that will last a lifetime.
Good Luck and God Bless you and your family

a papoose board is a board that the child will be restrained on for a medical exam or procedure. the child is swaddled or wrapped in blankets so they cannot move. then they are put on this board so they don't move and the dental work can be done. it is called a papoose board because it looks like the ones the indians used to carry their infants. it really is not as bad as it sounds. it won't hurt your son but he will be upset about not being able to move. this is a way to restraine a child instead of sedating them. hope it goes well. good luck.

A Papoose Board is a restraining item, they will Velcro his wrists and his ankles to this board to stop him from moving. They use this when the circumcise baby boys. It looks awful and it might hurt your feelings when you see him strapped to this board, but just remember they are trying to help him and he won't injure him self when they are doing the procedure. Everything will be ok.. I promise.

Please don't do this to your son, he will be traumatized by this for the rest of his life, he will be forever terrified of the dentist. He is only four years old and he looks to you to keep him safe. This is cruel and should be considered child abuse. The reason a child squirms at the dentist is because they are scared and in pain (not everyone is effected by Novocaine), please insist that for your sons treatment he be put under, that way he will not be terrified or hurt.

It is a flat piece of board w/ leg and arm straps alot like they would use on a gurney. They wanted to do this with my son once and I refused it. It seemed like it could be pretty traumatizing. We used zanax before we went and they gave him gas when we got there. The combination of the two seemed to work out pretty well and was not at all upsetting for him. Maybe this would be a possibility for your son?

It's like a board with a strait-jacket attached to restrain arms and legs. Someone will still need to hold him still.
When my son was two, he got a cut near his eye and they used one of these while they put stitches. I held him and did my best to comfort him throughout.
If the dentist will allow it, it might be less tramatic for your son if his mom or dad was within sight or maybe even holding him during the procedure.

It is simply a child size board with cloth straps that are crisscrossed over your child's body to keep him from fighting. His face is left exposed of course. Think of it as a full-body straight jacket.

please do not do this to your child. My son, who is 18 now,was three and had to get stitches. They put him on this board and yes it did traumatize him. He still really does not like doctors because of this. I would ask the dentist to sedate him instead.-
