My ex was a drunk and I lived with it/him for five years. Not every drunk is the same and what I will tell you hear is much different than what he would tell you.

Some of the characteristics are:

They always doubt anything you say, especially if it goes against what they think. Some form of abuse or manipulation. Drastic mood swings. Always borrowing money. Whatever they do or want to do is what should be done, and if you want to do something different then you are "spoiled" and always insist on getting your own way. They will never admit that they are wrong and any mistake that they make while being drunk they normally not correct. For example my ex got married after dating me for 4 1/2 years because he and a female friend got drunk together. He had not corrected it by the time I left him, 8 months later. He was living with his folks again. Did not take care of his dog properly. Had lost touch with most of his friends and was trying to pull me away from my family. Didn't like my cat. Would put me down about everything from clothing, to posture, to music, to my cooking skills, to my emotions and almost everything else.

I guess the biggest thing is that they insist on being first. It's almost like a small child. The alcoholic has to be the one before anyone else including your family, your friends, your pets, his pets, his family and whoever else may be in the picture.

You really can't because everyone is different when they are drunk. They can become quiet and withdrawn, extra friendly and talkative or loud, obnoxious and abusive. It depends on the reason they are drinking. Most people who drink too much do it to numb the pain of life...because they can't handle things. Unfortunately, when they sober up the original problems are still there and now things are even worse.

a mind altering beverage
thats what i call it because its true
after drinking for a long time they do become aggresive, they get irritated easily and violent. arrgumentive and impusive.
it only takes one wrong comment then snap, there mood changes totally and instantly, and after that there is no way to get them out of it. they get depressed after so many drinks and who they are with.
they black out alot and that is when they get violent and altered moods show. they tend to not know there limit and keep on drinking. they depend on it and live for it
it doesnt take much for them to get mad, trust me
they dont feel no pain and beleive thay are invincable when drunk,
you cant really tell how they think and feel when drunk cause there moods change drastically and quikly
they become not nice people,
you really cant change them you seriously cant until they are ready to change themselfs

i suggest that you get out if your involed with a drunk its not healthy for you nor the people around you, its there down fall and youll go down with them to if you stay

Every drunk doesn't have the same personality . . . but they do have some things in common. Low self-esteem, shame, guilt, anger, a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness, etc. My father was an alcoholic . . . and a tortured soul due to mental illness. He was just trying to kill the pain, and himself (albeit slowly). He succeeded and died at 44 from bleeding varices (veins) in his throat due to alcohol abuse.

well, i can't explain it all to you here, but i can tell you that one of the hallmarks of alcoholism is that nothing is ever their fault. it is all always someone else's fault. even their drinking is someone else's fault. someone made them do it. also, there tends to be a lot of denial that alcohol has anything to do with whatever is going on in their lives. for example, a person drinks a quart of vodka a day, hits his wife, his children won't speak to him, and he loses his job, but he will tell you that his wife purposely pisses him off so he has to hit her, his children are ungrateful brats and his boss is a jerk who was out to get him. and none of these things have anything to do with drinking a quart of vodka a day.
