I am 30lbs overweight, wake up needing to urinate, but I am usually in a sitting position when I awake. It is difficult to fall back to sleep afterward. I wake at about the same time each night, four or five times each night. I have never needed more than six hours sleep, ever since I was a child. I am in my mid 40's. Any ideas?

First and foremost I would suggest getting screened for Diabetes. Especially if you have any of the following risk factors or symptoms.

Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, physical inactivity, and race/ethnicity. African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, and some Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at particularly high risk for type 2 diabetes.

People who think they might have diabetes must visit a physician for diagnosis. They might have SOME or NONE of the following symptoms:

Frequent urination
Excessive thirst
Unexplained weight loss
Extreme hunger
Sudden vision changes
Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
Feeling very tired much of the time
Very dry skin
Sores that are slow to heal
More infections than usual.

Another possible cause could be diet. Take note of what you eat and drink before bed and see if any patterns appear.

Hope this info helps!!

Sleep apnea? Check with your doctor. I am overweight also, but I have other problems which keep me from falling asleep or staying asleep. I take Lunesta when necessary, to get caught up. Ask your doctor about the apnea and the Lunesta.

Good luck to you.
