What if we did have them still today, or the original writings. First, there were many people looking for the plates as it was. they were gold, and everyone wanted them to get rich. even if Joseph didn't return them to the angel Moroni, I doubt the plates would still exist today because someone would have found a way to take them.

The writings are gone to, or at least hidden for the same reason the Vatican "hides" manuscripts. not to hide the truth, but protect the sacred and prevent anyone else from manipulating them.

It's that simple, they are not here today for protection of those that would abuse and misuse

The Angel Moroni took it back. I am sure you know that before you make such speculation.

LDS belief is base on faith, Just like Jesus Christ said to Thomas, those who believe without seeing is much better than those who see then believe.

Think about those Isrealites in the old testament, did they not see
miracles of the red sea, the water from rock, and manna? even after all these miracles, they are still hard in their hearts.

drshorty and beast8981 had it right, the Angel Moroni took them back to Heaven to be hidden again.

daisykris also had it right, we do not have the ORIGINAL writings of the scriptures anymore either, all we have are copies of copies, that have been translated and the translated again.
That is why we are to take what they say by FAITH.

If we get on our knees and pray with an earnest heart and intent the TRUTHFULNESS of BOTH the Bible and The Book of Mormon will be manifested to us.

I know they are BOTH TRUE just as drshorty says.

Joseph Smith returned the plates to the angel who had originally told him where they were. However, you don't have to just believe Joseph Smith about the plates. Three, and an additional eight, other people have provided testimony that they saw the plates and that they are real. You can read their testimony in the beginning of the Book of Mormon, or at these links here:

I would have to agree with the other person that we should all respect each other and the ability to worship as we may. There are many things in any religion that cannot be substantiated by hard evidence. All relgion requires some level of faith (especially all Christian religions). If you disagree with the Mormons, then don't become one. Draw closer to God and be more Christlike.

Where are the original epistles from the Bible? Gone too. The point is, scriptures and spiritual things are found to be true through spiritual means. I know the Bible is the word of God, and I know the Book of Mormon is the word of God. I know that through the communications of the Holy Ghost, and nothing (originals of either being gone or not) can make me deny that.

I agree with Sadie... what did any of us ever do to you... For your information, he returned them to the Angel Moroni. See LDS Article of Faith 11 - We claim the privilege of worshipping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience and allow all men the same privilege - let them worship how, where, or what they may. Quit attacking us! PLEASE

And what us with the "Jews didn't exist in NYC 2000 years ago" answer all about? That has no relevance, our church was reorganized in the 1800s, not in NYC, and what do Jews have to do with any of it?

They didn't conveniently disappear. He returned them to the angel Moroni.

The question is, "Did they ever exist at all?"
Joseph Smith was illiterate, and, consequently, couldn't read. All the other fellows, who said they saw the plates, recanted before they died. Many feel that Smith told a story based on a book that a man had written long before.
