The DVDs I have have copyright encoding in them. I tried copying a DVD on my computer but it wouldn't let me. I hear there is software that will override copyright encoding but I can't find it.

I don't want to get in trouble with any copyright laws - just want to back up my collection.

If your country has laws similar to the DMCA
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMCA
then any copying of content protected by encryption is a crime.
This includes all DVDs which are protected as part of the standard.

It is probably illegal. The decryption software was found to be legal however to use it is probably illegal.

It is of course only sensible that people wan to back up movie collections as they are not cheap to buy when you buy more than a few at a time however just because we want to do it doesn't mean that the movie industry agrees with us doing it and the concensus of opinion seems to be that it is illegal in most western countries to do this.

What are the chances of you getting caught. Next to zero if you don't go round selling them to people.

I'd say it's not worth it. What's the point of having a copy of a DVD. You can only see one movie at a time and if you do lose or break one and really need to see it again just buy a new one, it's easier.
