Who is God here? Jesus or John? Who do you listen to and trust more?

If they are both speaking :"for God" than what is special about Jesus?
If Jesus is God, and John is not,
than wouldn't you trust what comes right from the horses mouth?

Yes it is true there are many different things we can do to increase our spirituality, grow, and become closer to God. However (at least if you are a christian) John is correct in that they are all based on faith in Jesus the Christ, in one respect or another.

This leads to the natural question: what is Faith? Faith is a belief, but also much more than that. Faith is a belief in something which we do not know, or cannot yet prove to be true, but we feel the evidence is good that it is true. Otherwise our belief is just superstition and it doesn't help us. Faith is actually the basis of all learning because we have to exercise faith that something is true before we can begin to apply that knowledge. Thus, faith is an action word, as according to Jesus, "Show me your faith without your works, and I shall show you my faith by my works."
(Although many Christians may not agree with this viewpoint i believe it to be well supported.)

Faith in Jesus Christ helps us improve our better natures. This is because we believe that with His help we can eventually overcome our weaknesses and our mistakes and grow to become more like Him and like God. To extend this line of reasoning, faith in Christ is actually the basis of all faith, as in order to exercises faith we must have faith that we can grow and change and thus have faith in Christ.

Now we know that we can become more like God, but what is God actually like? Again, Christ give us the perfect example. He was just, but also mercifull, compassionate, meek, humble, loving, "having no hypocrisy," hard working, long-suffering, and many more things. He cared about the welfare of others more that he cared about his own.

Good luck, I hope that answers your question at least in part.

It's good to question but keep looking. I'm new here and looking about most people here don't have a clue.

It's never about what you do or will do. Your sin past, present and future have all be paid for. You have been set free.

John is speaking on behalf of God in your question. All you need is to have faith.

The other stuff is fluff, nice to have but not necessary.

But aren't they really saying the same thing? Because John is just telling us to listen to what Jesus said, so his statement includes all of the things that Jesus taught. I don't think that the things Jesus taught are mutually exclusive, either. I don't see the conflict that you are seeing.

John certainly was a prophet, which means that he does tell us the will of the Lord. But his teachings are consistent with the teachings of Jesus.

Not to put too fine a point on it here, but think about this:

If you do all the stuff Jesus says to do, then what is a person doing? Following Jesus, right?

Exactly.

Jesus and his apostles could not read or write. The bible was written 30 years after he died by Romans looking for hope in a religious controlling government that would later endorse it for control. Be a good person treat people the way you want to be treated and enjoy life.

the bible has been revised and edited hundreds of times most things that were said in the Bible weren't actually said. they are both ways to get to heaven. all you have to be a good person and believe in God Jesus is a way to help us believe in God an easier alternative than Judaism

"Why does Jesus list many different ways you can get into heaven but John lists only one: to follow Jesus?"

Could you give references here?

Jesus only suggested one way to Heaven. "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Light. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
