Mid to late 90's Jeep Cherokee, or wrangler. If you get the cherokee get the inline 6 not the V8. I get an average of 28MPG on my 96 Grand Cherokee, and it goes anywhere I want it to go. Great for towing also.

1996-2001 Jeep Cherokee. Not the best gas mileage around (about 22 mpg), but they can take an extreme amount of abuse and keep going through whatever.

The rock steady part comes from the driver, not the vehicle. Just ask the idiots that slid off the freeway in their AWD Lexuses and Acuras!

not to be a smart about it but it is the vehicle that is all of the above except the rock steady in ice/snow. this last is the driver not the vehicle. the driver need to know how to drive on ice and snow or everything else is moot.

How about an older Jeep Wrangler? Great for snow and ice. My friend had one for years and never had any issues. He has a Mercedes now and wants to sell it for another older Jeep. They are comfortable for a jeep. A Toyota Four Runner may also be a good one - used of course. My friend had one and it ran forever, being a Toyota is was easy to maintain and was VERY comfortable.
