take him/her to the vet to make sure it is not something more serius like hypothyroid or a food allergy. i would advise that you change the dog food to a holistic label food...something with meat as the first 2 or 3 ingredients (meaning first 2 ingredients are meat) and should not have corn in it. diet creates more problems for dogs than anything else. if your dog has a foul smel, try bathing him/her with nizerol as it maybe a yeast infection. you may have to do it every few days in the beginning until the yeast goes away. my spartacus came to me as stray bald pomeranian who had a hypothyroid condition. he stank so bad and was so oily. i bathed him in nizcerol eery other day for 2 weeks and then once a week until the bottle was done. it cleared up his skin condition. i put him on a great diet and now he is a fur ball. i have had him a little over 6 months and you would never know he was ever bald, smelly and scabby.

Most dogs that have skin odors have either bacterial or yeast skin infections. There are occasionally other problems leading to odors such as dental disease, ear infections, anal sac infections or inflammation and seborrhea. A few people have
mentioned that their pet's develop odors after changing dog
foods. Some people noticed an odor that wasn't there prior to the new food and some people noted an improvement in previous odor problems when a change was made.
The best bet is to take your dog in to your vet for an examination to try to rule out correctable medical problems as a cause of the odor.
Good Luck

I had a dog that always smelled bad even though I washed him regularly. A groomer told me that the problem was that when I dried him, I didn't get all the way down to his skin through his fur. So I started using my blow dryer on low to get him completely dry and the smell went away.

Is it just a doggy odor or is it something obviously rank? It could be that he is rolling in nasty things when he goes outside. Or if he plays with other dogs, it could be the smell of dog spit stuck in his coat (after my two dogs would play with each other, often one would stink like dog breath because they'd put their mouths on each other).
Or he could have some kind of skin condition. If you think it's something worse than just a typical dog smell, take him to the vet to get him checked out.
If it is just a foul dog smell, you can buy some non-toxic spray called dog cologne to mask it.
Hope that helps!

Funny , he's on the people sections saying the same thing about you.
Sorry, I couldnt control myself. What is making your dog smell bad? All dogs carry a natural scent. If you bathe it too much you will cause skin irritation. Take it to the groomer and ask them.

I had a cocker spaniel once that had an awful odor to her for the longest time. We always assumed it was because she was always swimming in the lake...when we took her to the vet, they said that her skin was the problem. By changing her diet, her skin oils changed and she smelled better. Im not sure how that works..doesnt quite make sense, but the vet was right in our situation. Ask a local groomer too..they would know.

Take him to the vet or a good groomer, and have his anal glands checked. they probably need to be expressed. Dogs have a set of scent glands in their rear end, and they need to be emptied out from time to time, as they will get compacted and can cause problems for the dog. Is your dog scooting it's rear end on the carpet? if so, then it's probably the glands. these glands stink real bad. that is probably the stink you are smelling. I would get those checked out! Does he smell bad in any particular area, such as his ears or mouth? If so, that could be a sign of an infection. In that case, you should take him to the vet.

Put him on a different diet, such as change the food he eats, make sure there is always water available to him.
If that doesn't work call a vet for suggestions.
