She has dark blood in her droppings.. This is all that's wrong with her, she's acting completely normal. My mom says she's had this before for a few days and it went away on it's own. But she's had it about a week now and last night she went to the bathroom in the house. My mom has been only feeding her about a 1/2 cup of food each day with a cup of rice since she got sick. Not sure why, but somehow she got the idea that rice and being hungry is the answer to stomach problems.
Is there a legit reason for feeding her the rice? And what's wrong with this dog?

Any time there are obvious signs of digestive distress it's best to take away food, not give them more. Sounds like the dog could have a bit of pancreatitis, but there are many things that could lead to blood in the stool. Usually the stool with be poorly formed, or even runny (which might have lead to the accident in the house).
Take the dog to the vet and have it checked out. They'll be able to help you figure out what is causing the digestive distress and get you on a better diet for her.

Rice is easy on the digestive system which is a good reason for feeding it to dogs. I feed my puppy a food that is made with lamb and rice for this very reason. Your Mom's dog really needs to see a vet. It could be several things that are impossible to diagnose over the internet and without being a vet. It could be anything from an irritant to the lining of the digestive system to colon cancer. A stool sample needs to go to the vet with the dog asap.

Definitely take her to the vet! This could be a more serious problem. My puppy had blood in her droppings the first week we got her, and the vet prescribed her some medicine to help. Thank god it wasn't serious, but it could have been.
Also ask the vet about feeding your dog rice. Uncooked rice is highly absorbent of water, so that may be contributing to the problem?

There is nothing wrong with rice except that there are no nutritional benefits. Keeping a dog hungry will reduce the amount of stool but may not resolve the underlying problem which is internal bleeding. The dog should be taken to the vet, along with a stool sample.

an excellent sort of folk have a confusing time resisting those pleading puppy eyes. :) that's significant that she income some self-discipline the two for the dogs's sake and her very own. actually, tablescraps and doughnut holes are no longer giving the dogs the foodstuff he desires. She'll have lot's greater vet visits if the dogs does not consume greater efficient. that's severe priced to no longer feed dogs what they choose.

My dog had a similar problem a while back and also seemed perfectly happy otherwise. We found out that he had taken to chewing on a yew tree (poisonous to lots of animals). It stopped after a few days and he has been fine ever since.
So, it may be that he has eaten something to irritate his stomach lining or intestinal tract. But if it continues for any length of time, you should, as everyone else has said, take her to the vet.
As for rice, there's no reason why you can't feed it to dogs, although it won't make her problem go away.

When I was out of town one time, my dog had ate part of a music CD (husband "watching" dog). I got back at 3am and he was really wanting out of his crate. He pooped in the garage before he could make it outside. Then he tried to poop many more times and couldn't- the entire rest of the night. Next morning he did it inside- and there was blood in it. My husband woke me up and I asked if he had ate anything funny. No. Oh, yeah, he did chew up a CD. Straight to the vet for Xrays, antibiotics and some liquids for dehydration. It was a red blood that he had- dark blood normally indicates that is not fresh, e.g. hemorrhoids... it could be very serious. Needs to go to the vet- safe than sorry. Even if she comes out with a clean bill of health, it'll be worth it. You never mentioned her age, and I feed one of my dogs food that has rice in it. Good luck.

There is a recipe that you can use when a dog has diarrhea, and that is mixing cooked hamburger with rice...but that's for diarrhea. I would recommend you get the dog checked out for the blood. She might just be constipated for some reason and the blood is from her straining to go to the bathroom.

You don't say how old it is, but in older dogs, this could be a sign of bladder cancer or other serious medical problems.
Then again, it could be she's on her period. Female dogs have them about every 6 months or so. Most keep themselves clean enough that people don't notice it.
If she's been spayed, take her to a vet asap!

it could be as simple as an ulcer, but it warrents a trip to the vet. rice is just fairly easy to digest, but dont starve the dog. you can give it some boiled chop meat, as opposed to the dog food, it will be a little easier on the tummy too.
