I have a desktop computer and I'm trying to avoid buying a laptop, is it possible to transport a desktop computer on a plane? If so, how should it be packaged? Has anyone every done it before and what is the likely procedure if so? Thank you.

I work as a baggage handler; we handle computers fairly often as cargo, but in your case it'd have to be checked as baggage. If you do this, you should use PLENTY of packing and pack it solid. The box will have to be sturdy and taped well and strong enough to hold weight above it as this will likely happen in the bin.

Many airports have shipping stations in them (UPS/FedEx/etc.) where you can ship items to yourself without having to check them as baggage or worry about them. Ground service is inexpensive and these carriers offer insurance in case anything happens to your PC...

Pack it very securely, I have seen the baggage handlers throw bags and packages. It may be better to send it UPS to your destination.

Take it on board as hand bags, basically be sure with a steward in case you should use it in flight. turns into your duty and also you may blame no human being if something is going incorrect. Peace.
