Well to the people who think they make mininum wage they don't. They get very well paid for what they do, it's one of Starbucks mission statements. So i agree with the question why a tip jar.
Furthermore- here's what I found

Since when did doing something nice become an issue? Some baristas earn their state's minimum wage or close to it, and yes while they earn good benefits, you can't live on just health insurance and minimum wage, so getting tips helps a lot. Most people would have to find another job if it wasn't for the tips. It's the same concept as tipping a waitress, bartender or bellhop. If you think they did a great job, then tip them your spare change. And of course, tipping is always optional. You don't have to put money in the jar, it's just a nice thing to do. Especially when someone comes in 2 minutes before closing and asks for 3 frappucinos.
Also any tips from the tip jar are distributed every week based on the number of hours you worked. Managers or anyone higher are not allowed to take from the the tip jar.

You're right about it being overpriced and it's a matter of personal taste as to whether it's good. But, I think the tip jar has to do with service, not Starbucks. You are free to tip or not. The tip money goes to the employees, not Starbucks.

I completely agree. Starbucks rips off the customers with overpriced coffee and makes HUGE profits; then they expect the customers to help out the underpaid staff? If they are concerned enough about their employees low wages to put a tip jar up there, perhaps they should use a fraction of their profits to pay them more. That company is unbelievable.

I'm right there with you...I went to a chinese buffet the other day with friends, not only was it REALLY overpriced, but in the middle they had a guy who would make you stirfry if you put the ingredients together and he had a very full tip jar next to him....I am willing to tip a server, but if you make more then minimum wage you are on your own....
I prefer Millstone coffee from the local mini mart mixed with 1/4 of hot chocolate....yummy!

Well it's not as bad as if they were to come up to you and ask you to give them a tip while you are drinking your morning coffee or do they do that? Now that would be in your face but they don't do that do they? Do they hang you up by your toes and shake out all your pocket change to get it out of you? Come on now lets be realistic here.
If you don't like Starbucks then try another place instead. No one is forcing you to go there. Personally I don't like Starbucks and I prefer to go to a coffee shop that serves a good selection of beverages and that has good friendly customer service rather then feel that I am limited to just one coffee shop.

The tip jar isnt for the corporation its for the people behind the counter who make crappy wages. Its not their fault the coffee is overpriced and under flavored.

What a great question! I always saw the tip cup, but never put any money in it. There are probably uppity (snobbish) people who put money in the jar, I just figured the tip jar was for those drinks that took ten minutes to fix, for the worker who had to work his *** off for that one "fancy" latte. Maybe it's for that excess change from your ten dollars for that cup of coffee, that they want you to put in their tip jar!!

Perhaps you should find another place to drink coffee? The tip jar is to supplement the hugh wages that they make serving the delightful public. I think perhaps they need a larger tip jar.

Totally agree with you. I hate this new trend of putting tip jars out everywhere... if you're not making enough money, get a new job or complain to management and force them to pay you more. Don't expect me to pay for your overpriced goods and shoddy service PLUS give you a tip.
