This is probably an early 17th century quote that may be anonymous since I can't find who wrote it/said it first. I will take a gander at the personality of this person- at least slightly egotistical. Instead of admitting he didn't have an original thought in his head when a peer had the same idea he did, he spouted out the now famous quote. Hey- I guess that was an original idea, wasn't it?

This may be a Confucian proverb: "all great heroes think alike" (http://www.bartleby.com/66/62/2262.html)
So many people have said "great minds think alike," and for so long, that it's difficult to pin down a source (I hate it when people offer this type of non-answer too, but sometimes it's the truth).
Here's what one writer had to say -- "Often quoted in jest today, this saying originated in the seventeenth century as the comic-sounding 'Great wits jump.' Daubridgecourt Belchier first recorded the saying in 'Hans Beer-Pot' (1618) as 'Good wits doe iumpe (agree).'...The expression 'Great minds jump' appeared in the late 1800s..." From "Wise Words and Wives' Tales: The Origins, Meanings and Time-Honored Wisdom of Proverbs and Folk Sayings Olde and New" by Stuart Flexner and Doris Flexner (Avon Books, New York, 1993). (http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/32/messages/338.html)
Another writes "Great minds think alike, but fools seldom differ or great minds may think alike, but the best think for themselves. The phrase origin, "great minds think alike" isn't known but is attributed to 17 th century England as a proverb. There are earlier versions of it in Arabic - same meaning but long before the 17th century." (http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/41370)
Good for you for being curious about this phrase, it's origin, and the person who said it! These are things that should be of concern to more people who repeat often used phrases.
