Adding to what LongSnapper said about Gatorade, it is also said that the amount of sodium/minerals Gatorade replenishes is a lot, and you would basically have to be lifting a lot of heavy weights for a long time to have lost that much. Even in really hot weather when people sweat a lot, really only a little Gatorade if any is needed.

So the Gatorade doesn't really replace water. It IS water as water is in the drink. And then it has added stuff. Including sugars. If you know you are dehydrated, though, like in the case of food poisoning (and related issues), re hydrating with Gatorade really helps.

Also, if you're generally eating properly, you don't actually need to DRINK 8 glasses of water a day....

You get plenty of water in your food. The 8 cup recommendation is actually a mis-statement/oversight of the original recommendation which is a certain amount of water per calorie of food. It's a ratio. Given proper food intake, it comes out to about 8 cups of water a day, most of which is included in the food.

'"1ml per kcal energy expenditure for adults living under average conditions of energy expenditure and environmental exposure" - thus a person eating 2900kcal would require 2900ml of water.(v)
. . .
"An ordinary standard for diverse persons is 1 milliliter for each calorie of food. Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods." Valtin proposed that the last sentence may not have been heeded, and the recommendation was therefore erroneously interpreted as eight glasses of water to be drunk each day.' Too Much Gatorade

I read all the answers, and I guess there aren't too many people that know what gatorade is supposed to do.

When you work out or excersize extensively, you lose salt. Your body needs a certain amount of salt to balance the fluids.

The marketing behind gatorade, is that after extensive exercize you are supposed to drink that stuff, and replenish the salt that you've lost through sweating.

That's all well and good, but if you drink the stuff like you would diet coke or something, you are putting way too much salt in your system.

Over time this can cause water retention, high blood pressure, swelling in the lower extremities and is very bad for your heart.

Stick with the water, it's healthier for you.

Too much gatorade can cause kidney stones.

I don't know how much "a gatorade" is since they offer many sizes but if you mean one of the larger 64 ounce ones then you should definitely cut back. The smaller single serving 20 ounce is okay as far as kidney stones go. My husband works with a guy who was diagnosed with kidney stones and they said it was due to the large amounts of gatorade he was drinking daily.

Be carefull about the sugar intake from the gatorade as well. If you don't like just regular water, try sipping on flavored water. i prefer it myself, and if you buy Fruit 20 there's only about 10mg of sodium in the entire container.

There's a lot of garbage scattered in the answers here. "Gatorade has a LOT of sugar" -- 1) Sugar is not poison. 2) Sugar is not necessarily "bad" for you. 3) Gatorade has less sugar than soda. "Gatorade can actually wash out your body's naturally produced electrolytes thus making you sick" -- Pure Bullsh!t. (The crap some people make up!! Sheesh!) Gatorade has been researched for over 30 years. The formula has been tweaked and refined to enhance the health and performance of athletes. Any idiot that tells you it's "Bad" for you is completely ignorant of the facts. You may not need everything that it's providing, if you're sedentary. But it's not "Bad"!!

Gatorade really quenches the thirst, but drinking too much (I would say more than two 8-oz. glasses a day) is not great for you. There is a lot of sugar in it. How about trying a fresh, cold glass of water with a squeeze of fresh lime or lemon in it? It is very refreshing.

A small amount of gatorade is bad for you. If you want to try something that is just as good for you as water but tastes much better, try flavored sparkling water. It is so good - better than sodas in my opinion and contains absolutely nothing thats bad for you. (except that it does contain carbonation, which would not be good for you if you are going scuba diving or if you have had stomach bypass surgery for weight loss.)

it has water but gatorade has lots and lots of sugar, too.
so it's the sugar in gatorade that is a problem. you will
get fluid/water from it. try drinking something without all the
sugar...

to much gatorade is very bad for you because of how much sugar there is. If you exercise enough that you burn all of that sugar then you are fine but it is horible to your stomach and you can start gettin very bad hartburn.

what size? 20 oz? 48? or the gallon? will it will give you the fluid you need you will also get excess calories

try drinking smaller volumes more frequently... or eat high fluid foods....
