Why not??
ITER project is DEFINITELYsafe

Its atleast worth a try for finding whether fusion is suitable, economical and sustainable for a long time!
It may emerge a the ultimate fuel and the energy crisis will be gone forever.
You can see so many Positives.

But I cant see any negatives at all!
Its totally different from fission........no radioactive/toxic wastes at all. Energy and particles are confined within the toroid flux ....no chance of leakage.Tritium is quite costly too. so top priority is that none of it escapes by any means!

So I cannot see any negative impacts on the people near the site and the environment EXCEPT for the HUGE FUNDING REQUIREMENTS!!

Yes it is.
All the energy it uses is meant to focus and heat up the hydrogen isotope inside, in the hope of getting it to fuse and release energy.
Any leak of the magnetic confinement would mean the machine would stop immediately. And the amount of hydrogen inside is incredibly small, the machine requires a near perfect vacuum (except for the hydrogen, that is).
Unlike a fission reactor that requires a critical mass of fissile material arranged in a way that it allows chain reaction in a controlled way, fusion simply does not want to happen easily. Anything goes out of whack, and it stops immediately.
There is a requirement for a limited amount of tritium to start the reaction, which is mildly radio-active, but shielding against the beta rays is easy to do (and since tritium is so valuable, you will see all the precautions taken to ensure none of it escapes).

Of course it is. All the particles and reactions are held in a mgnetic containment chamber.
