if i am not in the house i would like to confine my puppy to the living room as it's the safest place for it to be, along with his (open) crate. what can i do to safe guard my sofa from the puppy? a plastic sheet over it would be dangerous, so what can I do?

I would strongly advise to keep the puppy inside the crate and not give him the freedom to destroy your furniture. Since this is an obvious concern for you, keep the puppy crated in the living room. As long as he has a few toys, he'll be fine.

Any room where you leave your puppy must be puppy proofed. A sheet over the sofa will make a fine toy to pull off and drag around the room while you're gone! Remember - it is never the dog's fault if something gets messed up.

If you're not home to monitor the puppy, keep it in it's crate. Depending on the age of the pup determines how long it can be crated without making a mess in the crate.

This is not the least bit cruel. Dogs LOVE a crate and learn to go in there as adults simply for quiet time.

Put your puppy in a bathroom or laundry room. Be sure nothing is within reach that you care about, i.e. toilet paper (that is GREAT fun for a puppy!).

Hope this helps.

Man, I would confine to the kitchen or laundry room --- anywhere except where there is soft furniture (bed, sofa, etc). Sorry, but until the pup is completely trained (about 1 yr), you WILL have the couch chewed on if you are not there. If he has to stay in the living room, give him a LARGE crate and close the door.

Are you sure this is the best place? Personally I wouldn't leave a puppy in the living room alone until a good bit older. You don't say what breed or size your puppy is, but whatever size, they can be very crafty at getting out of crates, boxes, etc. Have you electrical wires from tv, hifi, computer, etc? They are very chewable to puppies, never mind furniture. Good luck with your puppy.

A large crate would be fine for a short time not all day, if the living room is the only place you feel he should stay, when you are home you must train him not to go on the furniture at any time. but please remember even having it covered up puppies like to chew, even if they have toys to play with. Good luck

Puppies like their crates. They see this as their den, and placing him in there when you cannot supervise him is far more humane than letting him roam and possibly get hurt in your house or living room.

Unless you are PHYSICALY watching this dog, keep him in the crate with the door CLOSED. When he is out, let him drag a short leash so you can correct him without having to chase him around the house.

Try a plain King size sheet it will cover a large couch easily, you can tuck in and it does look too bad then remove wash and return.

They make sprays that you can't smell, but your puppy can, you should be able to get htem at any pet store. The smell will deter him, but keep in mind they are not 100%. You've entered the world of a puppy now, you've lost the world of nice furniture.
