I also suffer from severe back pain, so you have all the sympathy in the world from me.

Unlike yourself, I cannot stand to be massaged along my back. It's just too tender for that.

Hubby rubs cream into my back and even at times it's almost unbearable for him to do.

I also had an epidural, albiet 30 odd years ago, but since then I have done damage to my back and as I get older it gets worse.

Here are some hints which may help to alleviate the pain a tad for you.

Try sleeping with a small pillow between your knees or in the crook of your back.

Do gentle stretching exercises. A good one to do is 'push-ups' against the wall. With your hands against the wall, lower your body towards the wall, then push out with your hands.

Exercising in water is great for those suffering back pain. The water takes the bulk of your weight so it's easier to move around.

Lay on the bed on your back, raise your knees up so that your feet are flat on the bed, then slowly and gently drop your knees as far as is comfortable to the sides. Repeat this up to 10 times, or as much as you can comfortably do.

I hope that this helps you some and you gain some relief from your pain.

I suffer from back pain constantly so I do understand how much it can hurt. I've had surgery but I'll always have some pain because I have rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and scoliosis. However, I would encourage you to talk with your doctor about the pain you're experiencing. My daughter had pain after her first epidural. Now she's been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis too. You should definitely have some tests such as an MRI and X-rays to find out the cause and then treat it accordingly.

It could it be that the pain you are experiencing after the birth was caused by the way your daughter was laying inside of you, or the pressure she put on your spinal cord during the delivery. My own two experiences with epidurals were that if I had a back ache or leg pain before my epidural, I woke up with that same pain when the epidural wore off. If your ob/gyn can't help your back pain, I suggest going to a chiropractor to see if he/she could help you.

I know how you feel. This may sound like a silly question, but have you discussed this with your doctor? It is possible that you have a nerve injury, like I do. I have not gotten much relief from anti-inflammatory meds and actually was on them so long that they started hurting my stomach, so I had to find alternatives to deal with it. I started doing Yoga on a daily basis and make sure I have a really good mattress on my bed. I still am bothered by a certain amount of pain from time to time, but have just learned to manage the condition on my own as the medical community wasn't very helpful. I can recommend some good Yoga tapes you can purchase as well as some other things that you can try to see if they work for you. Just email me at mrslabel@yahoo.com
