I have read in several locations that you can not sink in quicksand if you go on your back and float. Quicksand is sand suspended by upward -moving water currents. Struggling can cause a suction with gripping power causing panic. In the movies actors walk down a set of stairs into a mixture of water and perhaps oatmeal and that should not be used as a true reference.

You do sink but only to your stomach or somewhere thereabouts. It is too heavy to sink much deeper. Since quicksand is heavier than water, you will float on it.

I think you just sorta get stuck in it, no sinking involved.
