I'm not American nor Brazilian but I have experienced both cultures after having lived in both the US and Brazil. I find Americans don't have good interpersonal skills when compared to Brazilians. In other words, when faced with the same situation/problem, Brazilians tend to be more polite, patient, tolerant, understanding and usually remain calm at all times. Customer service people such as clerks, cashiers, employees, waiters, etc. usually provide you with high-quality service in Brazil while in the US, these same customer service people are usually rude and provide a mediocre service. The same goes for health care providers. Health care in Brasil is of much higher quality than that of the United States and at a much lower cost. Doctors tend to be very patient, caring and stick to a high ethics standard in Brazil (and the rest of Latin America).

I agree that the reasons behind this are probably rooted in our diverse and widely seperated population. People simply don't have as much experience interacting with others or know how to handle many social situations because of fear. People of any race in this country are quick to judge even the most innocent look or statement a stranger may make to them, so many people find it more comfortable to just forego an interaction all together. People are simply intimidated by black & white, rich & poor, this religion over that religion, etc.

Why do you think so few people wish each other Merry Christmas or even a generic "Happy Holidays" during december anymore? It's because no matter what you do to make it universally friendly you will still always end up offending most people. I'm sure after another 5 years or so no one will be wishing anyone a holiday anymore. Our population appears rude, indifferent and cold because social interactions cause too much stress in this country and so we avoid them

I don't know if it proves the same in Brazil, but in the US customer service/clerk/retail jobs are generally reserved for the young, students, etc. With our young generations being raised in world that functions (or should i say, malfunctions) around racial/social politics its easy to see why service can be poor and seem so unfriendly

I think some of the prob. here is political correctness. When certain people are rude such as in customer service, etc. the employer is afraid to say or do anything. Fears being accused of being racist, so it's easier to just ignore the prob. I don't know about Brazil but, the solution for you would be to move back there.

This tends to happen because many people in America believe that the majority of the world owes us something. And I think that that is pretty stupid.
