I would say it's worse than paying for nothing, because had you not wanted to analyze it yourself, you would've trusted their interpretation of asthma and took actions for something you might not have had. So technically, you could sue them for any damages caused by this.

But I really doubt it's worth it consider they have a lawyer and the amount of money it'd take to sue them and the fact that you didn't actually do much with the false diagnosis doesn't give you much of a case.

There is however a very specific asthma test that you can get in an ER, that would remove all doubts of whether you have it or not. I'm not sure if your physician performed it on you, but it may be worth a glance.

If your physician did perform this test, it is possible that you do have asthma and it was triggered by dust.

A lot of people go through their lives without asthma in their middle ages. They are born with asthma, get an asthma relief at age 12-14 and it comes back in their elderly ages. If this is your case, might be good to know now.

Hope this helps,
Ken

Yes, you still pay the bill. ERs aren't always the best place for diagnosis. The purpose of going to the ER is to solve the immediate emergency. It's meant that you follow up with your own doctor to be sure you're OK and if a diagnosis was offered in the ER, to confirm it. You should talk with your own doctor before dismissing the asthma diagnosis. It's possible that you do have asthma and that the furnace filter was triggering it.
