Its pretty much just plastic bottles that can be recycled, even if it is recyclable most counclis will still only accept bottles.
The sybol you have to look out for is a triangle with a number in it. the numbers correspont to specific polymers and the recycling process currently predominantly recycles types 1, 2 and 3. Sometimes you will find letters too which are abreviations for the plastic name.
The 1, 2 and 3 plastics melt in the recycling process whereas numbers 4-7 burn and so ruin the process which is why trays, pots and boxes are often not accepted. Hopefully new techniques will be developed soon to be able to recycle more plastics.
Definately put out plastic bottles and if you can see the numbers 1, 2 or 3 give it a go as well. It might be best to check on your councils website as they will give you more detailed info

When you recycle plastic be sure that you separate the plastic out, the little symbol on the bottle, jug, etc. that tells you what type of plastic it is, to recycle properly you should mix the numbers, most bottles are #1 so when you recycle only put #1 in the bag, if you add a #2 you jeopardize the integrity of the plastic when it is melted down, even though recycling facilities have sorters to sort the different numbers they do not always catch the mixed up plastic.

All plastics can be recycled, however your local trash authority may only collect certain types of plastic for recycling.

Call your collection company. I work for one in wisconsin and what we take here differs from what other companies take. It all depends on where they haul their material to. some facilities are more advanced than other and can handle more types. The two types that you should be 100% safe on putting in there are #1 and #2. this covers the majority of consumer plastics(milk jugs, pop bottles, ect) you collection company should be more than happy to mail or fax you their list of what you can and can not put in the bin

if it has the sign then it can be recycled, but be careful what your council will collect. ours will only take bottles and have said not to put anything else in there.
