Guilt!
Also, some people just handle things differently. Some people can just totally ignore the issues and get along with everyone in the family no matter what. Someone like me can't. I would rather just pretend they don't exist than have to deal with them. I send Christmas cards and I am polite if I have to deal with them at family events, but I just otherwise pretend they don't exist. I don't need the drama/gameplaying bs in my life. My goal is to preserve my sanity.

Because of the bond of being related sometimes it takes a bit more time to break a relationship even if they are making trouble for you.

Because they are your links to your bloodline. When you have kids you may not want them to be close to the "troublemakers" but you do want your kids to know where they came from and who their relatives are. And you keep in touch cause you are a better person than just tossing your family aside.
