Your dog is already is being protective of the baby and wanting to help take care of him. When you leave the room, your dog is probably wondering why you left him there. Dogs have no sense of time so you leaving the room for even a few minutes can seem like a long time to your dog.
Not to be mean, but dogs should never be left alone with a baby for any length of time. With the signs your dog is exhibiting, there is a chance that the dog will try to pick up the baby like he would a puppy which can seriously injure the baby. It won't be out of aggression, it sounds like you have a sweet dog, it will be out of concern and wanting to "reunite mother and child". Just be careful, k?

It means you must NEVER leave the two of them alone.
Dogs do not generalize well. This baby is a new creature to him. He doesn't "get" that it is a really small human you gave birth to.
His actions around the baby (as you have already said) are unpredictable. Your dog may be the sweetest creature on earth, but leaving him alone with the baby is not safe.
A sudden movement or sound from the baby may startle this otherwise lovely dog and provoke aggression or ROUGH PLAY which could hurt/kill your baby.
Please do not leave the two of them alone---not even if the baby is in a portable crib/playpen on the floor. Expose them to each other ---but in controlled circumstances.
Please, please, do not become the next story we read on the news about a dog injuring a child. Your child and your dog would thank you if they could.

Do not EVER leave your dog alone with your baby!! even if you are just across the room. This is a general rule, no matter how wonderful or loving your dog is, you never know. The interest the dog is showing in the baby is normal. He may just be protective of the baby, or just interested in this new novelty in the house. either way, your dog should only have access to the baby when you are RIGHT THERE and able to intervene in case something were to happen.

It is nice to know how protective he is of the baby, but his behavior can become a bit rough on the baby without meaning to. In the wild dogs/wolves have one mating pair and the others help raise the pups. Your dog seems to be taking on this baysitter role which could accidently hurt your child. There is nothing wrong with your dog being around your child but he needs to respect his space, no matter how well you know the dog you should never leave a child that age unattended with one,

Your dog knows your baby is important to you and is probably wondering why you are leaving him in the room on his own. Your dog will want to protect him for you but never leave your baby in a room on his own with a dog - even the most good natured dogs could turn without notice and you would never forgive yourself if something bad happened

Most dogs will know instinctively that the baby is precious to you...part of the family. The dog will 'guard' your baby while you are away. Sometimes, a dog will even 'guard' a pregnant woman by laying with her all the time. I wouldn't worry too much unless the dog showed signs of aggressiveness towards anyone. By licking him, he is basically kissing him. Dogs are smarter than we credit them for.

I hate to be the only one to say something negative about the dog but it could be jealous. Until the baby was born it was just him right. He got your attention and now theres this little baby who gets ALL the attention. Like everyone else said, the dog knows how important the baby is to you and may just be acting protective but PLEASE don't take your eyes off that dog for a second. He could mistakenly try to play with your baby and end up hurting him.

It means that you shouldn't leave your two month old baby alone with your dog!!!
It's tough to say what your dog's thinking through those actions, so...keep an eye out for any aggressive behavior.
