I have an 8 yr old male, fixed Himlayan cat. He has always been aloof, like alot of cats, and only wanted attention or affection on his own terms. Recently he has done a complete turn around and will seek me out in the house and get on my lap no matter where I am. He sleeps up near my neck/head every night now too. I am loving the change in him (his nickname for 8 yrs has been oscar-as in grouch) but I'm concerned it could be health related and maybe he isnt feeling well and wants to be near 'mom'. It's seriously as though he is a completely different cat. (And no, there is no way it's a different cat)

Chances are, it's just age related. As he gets older, he's getting more comfortable and relaxed and wanting more attention. This is more common than a lot of people think. I have raised cats my entire life and have seen this behavior several times. Just recently we went through the same thing. Our oldest cat, who used to be extremely mean and refused to allow people to touch her, became this loving lap cat out of nowhere. I was laying in bed one night and she just jumped up, meowed, then laid on my lap and started kneading on my stomach. I was scared she was sick so I took her to the vet for a check up to make sure. Vet said she is perfectly healthy, just relaxing in her more matured age. If there are no other signs of illness, don't worry.

It could be age related. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong. He could just realize he is old and too tired to be the way he was. I would take him to the vet just to have peace of mind. If there were something seriousely wrong, most cats are good at keeping it a secret.

Kitty mid-life crisis. *laughs* no really my cat did the same thing after my sister moved out, mabye there's been a big change recently around your house that's just upset him. If you're really woried just take him to the vet for a routine check up, they don't cost very much and it's worth the peice of mind.

I hate to tell you this, but he might be getting old and seeking affection because of it. He may also be slightly depressed. Do you play with him on a regular basis? Also, are you working more than usual? These might all be contributing factors.

You should take him to the vet. I had one who did this and was perfectly fine - she just decided to suddenly blossom a year ago and she's fat and frisky and shiny, and sleeps on my stomach every night-- but I had another one who suddenly took to sleeping in my hair, and becoming very lovey, because he felt bad and was seriously ill (mouth cancer; his symptoms included bad breath that he hadn't had before). So take him to the vet to make sure.

Well, all you can do re. the worries you have about his health is get him checked out by the vet. Otherwise.....enjoy while it lasts. His personality may change back....especially if you live in a climate where summer is on its' way....

When cats get older, they either get mellower or nastier. Luckily most do the former. Enjoy!

He is an older cat and he might be trying to stay warm.

i think you need to take advantage of his sweet kitty love while you can!!! i would also suggest that you take him to your vet and have him checked out. it would ease your mind, and if there IS a problem, maybe you will have caught it soon enough..
