I don't think the Car of Tomorrow can really be judged until it is the Car of Today - that is, until we have seen it in action in the Cup Series. If the racing is more exciting and the drivers are safer, then it will have proven itself. To be truly fair, we should probably hold off judgement until it has debuted on all track types, but it won't be raced on a 1.5 mile track until 2009.
As for the car being ugly, I guess that's a matter of personal taste. Many of the body shape changes were made to make the cars look more like the street models they intended to promote. The roof height, side window shape, and front bumper (except for the splitter) are now A LOT more like the Monte Carlo, Fusion, Charger, and Camry.
A lot of drivers have voiced their opinions on the new car, many of them negative, but that's just because it's new and different. NASCAR drivers are notorious for disliking the new and different. Once they stop comparing it to the old style car and focus on making the new one go fast, the complaining will stop.

If NASCAR's aim is to make all the of the cars equal, then it is a good idea. But since it's inception, NASCAR has been for the innovation of the teams to tip the balance. Builders like Smokey Yunick and Harry Hyde put cars into the winner's circle because they had an advantage over the other cars. If NASCAR wants to become the next IROC, then they are on their way with the Car of Tomorrow. Personally, I don't like it.

When I first heard about the higher bonnet and higher roof, I thought, "It will look like an old Russian Lada with a spoiler".
It doesn't. It looks like the new Volkswagen Beetle. You call that a race car?
If their concern was safety, they should have reduced the engine capacity and mandated V6 engines. Making the car less aerodynamic is not the solution.
In 1999, CART reduced mechanical downforce with smaller wings without reducing power. The result? Go look up what happened to Greg Moore at Fontana, California on October 31 1999.
"It will be exciting, if you want to watch carnage."
- Greg Moore, July 1999
Moore said that at Michigan, which has the exact same dimensions as Fontana except for the banking (Michigan 7%, Fontana 5%).
And people wonder why I call the series NASCRASH.

I am liking it more as well, first and foremost because it is supposed to be SAFER. But also because it will save money in the long term by not having to have so many cars in the stable. The same car can be run on all tracks, therefore saving money, which means that more people can afford to race. The more competition, the better the racing !!! And everybody knows that I have a need for SPEED !!!

i still don't like it. first it does not look like a flippin' stock car which irritates me to no end.
second, i don't really know much about the performance of it, and of course NASCAR is going to talk it up..but most of the driver's who have tested it do not have anything nice to say about it..so until i actually see something that proves me differently it's a thumbs down.
they say it's going to even up the competition.. UHMM NOPE. they've done crap like this in the past and teams find ways to make engines better or whatnot to uneven the competition..
safety reasons have been cited. uhmm the car of today has proven to be pretty damn safe.. so i don't buy that one either..

After seeing one up close, I think they are awesome. I was able to watch one being tested and they really are slick cars. I think that the racing is going to be better and the drivers will be alot safer. I am glad they are going with the Adjustable Wing instead of the standard spoiler on the back end.

I think it is a great idea. Although alot of the upgrades probably won't make it to the actual cars on the track.

i hate the car of tomorrow. NASCAR has lost a lot of its original values and this car looks stupid and takes away a lot of the thrill of the sport.

I'm waiting to see if it does what NASCAR claims before I pass judgment. I don't like the boxy look, but that may be just my resistance to change. I'll probably get used to it.
