The National Guard performs the dual role of military reserve and state militia. In time of peace they are under the command of the state Governor while training under the supervision (and to the standards of) the US Army. In time of national need they can be recalled to active duty (and cease being National Guard during the duration of Federal service). In time of local emergency they are available for duty as required by their local communities (most visible is the National Guard response to natural disasters).

There are several less visible roles the National Guard plays. From providing military honors at the funerals of veterans, to assisting law enforcement, to running youth camps - the National Guard also plays many less visible roles in the communities.

I am in the Indiana National Guard. We have helped people down in the southern states after hurricane Katrina. We help towns in southern Indiana after there was a flood along the Ohio River. The Colorado guard I believe is helping people stuck in the snow storm. The guard would probably deal with riots. They can do search and rescue. Thats a few things... I am sure there are more the guard could be called up for.

My son is in the Illinois National Guard Reserve. They have several troops going to Iraq. There are some who are at the border of US and Mexico helping patrol and will help build the fence that is supposed to go up. They help locally and abroad as needed. Thanks for your question.
