We have always soaked our rabbits and squirrel in saltwater, it helps to get the blood out of the meat. We would put them in a bowl of saltwater in the fridge for a few hours, then cook, or freeze them. It is not necessary, but we have always done it.

Most people let it soak a couple of hours, like any other meat you just need to cook it thoroughly, although I never knew rabbit to be good for anything besides stew?
