The sugar is one thing. The mildness of the alcohol itself it another. While hard liquors (whiskey, gin and so on) have more alcohol per ounce, they shut down the stomach absorbtion mechanism slightly when you drink them. Too harsh.
Wines and even more so, coolers and Sangria, which are milder and cut with fruit juices don't cause the stomach to react that way. The stomach sucks the liquor right up with the sugars and fruit juices.
It's also easier to drink more liquor faster because of the mild flavor of the wine/cooler.

Sangria may be more or less potent than wine, as both will vary considerably depending on style. Sangria is often bolstered with brandy and/or citrus liqueur and could be as high as 20% alcohol by volume, or diluted more with fruit juices and be as low as 7%. Most wines range between 10-15% alcohol by volume. For slightly sweet red wines, try a few ruby Port style wines. You may like them!

Sangria is traditionally a light wine punch. The bottled stuff is not a real sangria just cheap unsellable wine, flavoured and sweetened. It is also not high in alcohol, many red wines are higher. I suggest you don't have a high tolerance to alcohol.

When i make sangria i use brandy and triple sec as well as wine. 3 types of alcohol plus extra sugar from the fruit = buzz buzz buzz.
Drink a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage. You'll still catch your buzz, but you won't wake up feeling like someone sprayed styrofoam inside your mouth. And you'll save money too!

A part of it's variable alcohol level, it's as simple as that.
It's the same reason why sweetened cocktails are so dangerous to get drunk.
