This drink has its origins in English pubs, hundreds of years ago, when Port had just started being mass-imported to Britain. The strong, heavy port wine was mixed with lemon juice, perhaps because it was too strong on its own or perhaps because the lemon juice was seen as healthy and would prevent illness such as scurvy or perhaps simply for the flavour. In those days, the drink was known as a 'Lemonstrap' in reference to 'Blackstrap' (the colloquial name for Port wine). This name is not commonly used today the only other name for this cocktail I have come across is a 'Pal,' simply an acronym of the ingredients, though I have only seen it in one pub (which suggests they made it up) and I think it sounds a bit rubbish, as cocktail names go.

Hope this helps.

Hi

In England, among the older generation, a port and lemon is still not unheard of - although usually it's what nice old ladies talk about drinking in their day.

Never heard of a special name for it though!
