My mom has lost her voice three times in the past year. When she loses it, it takes around 3 to 4 weeks for her voice to be fully restored. She went to a doctor one of the times, but he was not helpful at all. Does anyone know what might be causing this or what might help?

It may be a good idea for her to see a Neurologist for a consultation, she may have a condition called Spasmodic Dysphonia. This just means the the vocal cords are spasming, making it difficult to speak. This is normally treated with Botulinum Toxin (Botox) injections into the vocal cords. This will paralyze or stop the spasming making it possible for her to speak again, the downside is that this treatment will have to be repeated every 3 months if in fact this is what she has. Good luck.
