It used to be that they were supposed to coordinate in some way, usually involving having the bridesmaids in something hideous so the bride stood out that much more.
These days, traditions matter less and less with wedding attire.
My sister had a strapless dress, and the four bridesmaids were in dresses made in slightly different ways. This was mainly because I was pregnant, and no style that worked on me would work for the other skinny girls, and vice versa. Our dresses ended up being of the same color and material, but I had an empire-waist ankle-length cap-shoulder dress, my other sister had a spaghetti-strap sheath, one bridesmaid had this kind of long flowey-skirt with short sleeves, and one had a sleeveless a-line. It actually worked great.

The bridemaids dresses should match the "feel" of your dress. For example if your dress is elegant then you need elegant bridemaids dresses. The do not have to be strapless like yours is or even the same pattern. Make sure you take into consideration the size of your bridesmaid and try to find a dress that fits all body types.

every wedding I've been to/in that has had a strapless dress has had haltertop dresses for the bridesmaids. They made the bride stand out, also they flatter almost any body type.

Traditionally they should match in overall cut & style, but they don't have to be matchy-matchy. They should at least have the same "feel"
If your dress is a fully "princess" style dress then a short contemporay dress would not look appropriate for your maids. If you have a more sleek gown, then theirs should be "sleek" even if it does have straps.
But of course - it is your wedding and you have to consider the girls.
Hope this helps!

Whatever you like. Just remember that everyone has different body types. Try doing something that they are all comfortable with. Have them try on different dresses and tell you what they think of them. Compromise and maybe they can have dresses that are slightly different so they are comfortable.
