Information always flourishes with technology.

Christianity is so widespread because of roads. Rome made some great advances, and Christianity benefited from it.

With powerful shipping lanes, Muslims spread to other parts of the world.

And with easy air travel, you can find just about any religion where the government does not suppress it.

The internet has all the advantages of above, plus it offers the convenience that you don't have to actually move. It links people together. Imagine being an atheist in rural Mississippi without the internet. You simply keep your mouth shut and wonder why all these people are so gung ho. But now, a Mississippi atheist can discuss his thoughts with other atheists. He can learn from those who walk the same path. No longer must he remain silent.

And this is true for all beliefs, not just atheism. Being Mormon or Muslim in Mississippi wouldn't be that easy either.

We're gaining some ground, though.

It's just one avenue. But because it's the internet, you have to take a lot of what you read with a grain of salt. One person cannot speak for all.
