Months ago, I ditched Internet Explorer - thought I had deleted every sign of it from my computer - and picked up Firefox.
Ever since then, however, I have always gotten random pop-ups from Internet Explorer, while browsing on Firefox.
I think I might have tried to remove Internet Explorer incorrectly (not using the actual "uninstall" tool), which might explain part of the reason, but I also know that Windows naturally incorporates a lot of IE into its system and internet defaults and whatnot...So, I started thinking maybe it's not even possible to COMPLETELY remove it...
But what do you think?
I sometimes get the pop-ups in Firefox as well, so I know there's something else I should be doing, but that's a lesser problem - the bigger issue is the random pop-ups from an entirely different internet browser I haven't used in the majority of the time I've had this laptop!
Please help!

As the above poster said. It is part of your operating system. You can not completely remove it. I also feel you are infected with spyware/adaware. Run the 2 scans below and then add spyware blaster to your security apps.
Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php
Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.
It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer has been added to the Add/Remove Windows Components section of the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
Firefox 2 has a built in pop up blocker

Well you might have deleted the major uninstall files thus creating a bigger issue. Try going to control panel > add/remove programs and see if the ghost is still in the IE spot. If there is, try uninstalling it. IF there isn't then you will have to reinstall / download it from a new source and then uninstall it.
You should always use the add/remove programs to safely remove programs you no longer want. Keep it simple, don't create problems.

Hello, Mozilla Firefox has nothing todo with slowness, you got a nasty virus thought. If you use P2P programs (such as WinMX, LimeWire....) that are the reasons. Do you think Anti-virus protects you 100% ? wrong, probably only 50%, it just increase the chance of protection if you are frequently updates Antivirus program. There are hundreds or even thousands of new viruses out there created daily. I highly recommend you to backup your data, and wipe out your PC completely and reinstall (or use recovery) the operation systems from the scratch. As your computer infected with Virus, it could opens the back doors (open ports) to allow further attacks (there are 65000+ ports). Reinstall the OS will guarantee your systems is Virus Free, no vulnerable. However, as reinstall the OS, you need to perform all windows updates, anti-virus updates, anti-spyware updates.... make sure they are up-to-date, then you SAFE. oh, make sure to load the latest Firefox, you will love it. good lucks!

Microsoft claim that IE is required for the computer to work correctly... it may not be your browser of choice butthey say it's needed. I know that Microsoft's website tends not to work with firefox... so you can't patch without IE. I think windoze update uses IE.
So, you may find you have odd problems with no IE.

IE is tightly integrated into the operating system, so it's very difficult to get rid of.
It sounds like you are infected with spyware, which is causing the popups - try doing a scan with Microsoft's free antispyware

No. Some of the files that firefox uses is actually part of IE. This is why it is very important to update to IE7 even if you never use it.
