HELL IN KJV
One Hebrew word “sheol” is rendered hell. Definition; hades or the world of the dead (as if a subterranian retreat), grave, hell, pit. Three Greek words are rendered hell; geenna, hades, and tartaroo. Definition of geenna; a valley of Jerusalem, used (figuratively) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment: - hell. Definition of hades; properly unseen, that is, “Hades” or the place (state) of departed souls: - grave, hell. Definition of tartaroo; (the deepest abyss of Hades); to incarcerate in eternal torment: - cast down to hell. Tartaroo is used only one place II Pet.2:4.
Christ teaching the Pharisees in Luke 16:19-31 shows us a separation from God is truly what hell is. The “water” is symbolic for God’s Spirit and love. The word “tormented” means distressed in the Greek, not torture. The “fire” is symbolic for the shame and desire not to be separated from God.
So all who die the first death of the flesh return to God Ecc.12:6-7, but on which side of the gulf do they end up?
Hell is not eternal but is done away with in Rev.20:14-15, called both the second death and lake of fire. This second death is non-existence, for death and hell and those not written in the book of life. This second death or lake of fire is like fat drippings that fall into the fire. Just a poof of smoke into non-existence.
Psa.37:20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.
In my mind what’s worse yet is no memory of you, no tears will be shed for you like you never existed.
Rev.21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
So hell is a separation from God and is not eternal torture or burning. Eventually hell will be done away with or passed away and also some souls. Like fat drippings in the fire, a poof of smoke into non-existence, the second death.

When Adam sinned in the garden, he died spirtually. (Gen. 2:17)
This affected the whole human race; all of us are born spiritually dead. (Romans 5:12) Since everyone sins, when they die, they go to Hell (II Peter 2:4-5). The only exemption is those saved by Christ, who go to heaven. (Romans 5:21).
When Christ died on the cross for the elect people's sins, He said, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
(Mark 15:34). As he was paying the penalty for sin, albeit not his own, you can see what happens when people pay the penalty for their sin. God forsakes them. You can tell from the way Christ spoke, it is not an easy thing to be forsaken by God. Since Hell is the place where God punishes the wicked, and Christ paid the sins of others, you can look at the account of his death to get a rough idea of just how terrible Hell is. At the end of the world, on Judgement day, Hell will be cast into the Lake of Fire.
Hell is a place where fallen angels are resevered unto judgement, and where wicked go when they die, to be judged and forsaken of God.
Our sins are against an infinite God. We are finite. No matter how long the wicked are punished in hell, and than the lake of fire, their sins will never be paid for, therefore the punishment will last for all eternity. An infinite number of years.
This may be a hard thing to hear, yet there is a way out, and that is only threw Christ's saving death on the cross. Christ is fully God and fully man, so he is both infinite, and man. He can than pay the penalty of our sin to an infinite God. "For by grace are ye saved threw faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Not of works lest any man should boast...."
(Ephesians 2:8-9) The way to receive this gift is by faith in Jesus Christ for your salvation.
I hope this helps to aswer your question, and more.

Hell is a mechanism of power for many creeds, installed by religions to take control of peoples lives.
"Do as we tell you or the worst thing you can think of will happen to you for all eternity!"
Religions who teach re-incarnation use a points system with good people coming back as better things and bad people coming back as not so good things.
Ultimately it's all academic anyway. Nobody knows what the hereafter is and anyone who claims they do is either sadly misled or just thick.
I would like to believe that my time after this would be spent with my friends and family, somewhere nice, drinking cocktails.

Read Psalm 88, it gives a pretty good description of hell. The really sad part is to be separated from God. That may not sound bad to folks who say they don't believe in Him. But while you are alive God still gives blessing to all mankind, He still offers protection to all human life. Its one of those things that you won't miss it until it is gone, then you will see how God tried to reach you. Hell, sounds lonely to me.

Death is inevitable. The thief on the cross knew when his would occur, but we can not predict our own. After his death, the crucified criminal went to live in paradise with Jesus. Some of us will also live eternally in God's presence. But others will experience everlasting torment, forever separated from Him.
If we receive Jesus as our Savior, our penalty for sin is paid. We are adopted into God's family, and Heaven is our eternal home. If we reject Jesus, we remain alienated from the Lord and under condemnation for our sin. We are destined to experience eternal judgment. God won't accept any of man's excuses because there is no acceptable defense for unbelief. (Acts 4:12)
Become part of God's family today. Acknowledge your sinfulness, and express your faith in these words:
"God, I have sinned against You. (Romans 3:23) I've followed my own way and refused to give You the right to rule in my life. (Romans 3:10-12) I recognize I am separated from You and cannot rescue myself. I do believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son. I accept the truth of the Scriptures? that His death on the cross paid my sin-debt in full. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) And I ask You to forgive me of my sins. (1 John 1:9) By faith, I receive You, Lord Jesus, as my personal Savior from this moment on."
If you just spoke those words to God, then, like the thief on the cross, you have received salvation? a gift of God's grace. The heavenly Father welcomes every person who comes to Him through His Son, regardless of background, age, or current situation. Through Jesus, the right to enter paradise is yours!

Don't confuse hell (sheole or hades) with
the lake of fire (limnay poor).
One is a subterranean place for dead people, the other is a place of torment which will be the second death.

Hell is a holding place until judgment for those who did not accept Jesus Christ. It is hot, there is separation from God and it is a place of torment , no hope.
