I saw on a Discovery Channel piece once that analyzed the differences between human males and females that men are largely built to run fast, bring down large game, and shoot sperm at whatever they can (the DC said this a little more correctly). Women, as the childbearers, are designed to nurture, and therefore need to stick around a little longer to make sure the following generations learn what they're supposed to. They gave all sorts of great supporting evidence for this, but bear with me--I saw it several years ago. A couple things mentioned though are:
Men produce active sperm until they die; women stop menstruating well before their life expectancy.
Men are really good with spatial relationships, distance estimations, etc (for hunting and/or parallel parking); women typically are not as good.
Women are very good at multi-tasking (typing, talking on the phone, cooking dinner AND bouncing a child on the knee), Men tend to complete one task before moving on to the next.
These are generalizations, not saying that this is a unbreakable law of nature..just natural tendencies. And hey, talk to Discovery Channel if you don't like it. It's their stuff.

Well, aside from some biological differences, you have to remember that statics are always slightly skewed. Men are more likely to die young because young men are testosterone-bound oafs. Not that it really stops as the years go by, but I suspect if you discounted anyone who died before they reached the age of 30, the average life-spans of men and women in North America would be much closer.

men live a more physical life and are more likely to die young. They tend to ignore symptoms that are a sign of fatal illnesses and die that way as well. A woman will see a doctor when she seems ill and they have that natural immunity to sicknesses that come natural to motherhood. There are more males born than females but by the time you hit middle age it reverses to more women than men of that age group due to the higher death rate among young males.

In the old day, they did, but now in the present day, doctors are saying women are as prone to heart disease as men are.
