Just wondering, Im not comparing or anything. Out of pure curiosity I would like to know how your 2 year olds vocabulary is? Do you know of a website where it shows where your 2 y/o should be vocabulary wise? Just wondering. Thanks for your input I appreciate it.

I don't know of any websites but I can tell you the average 2 year old should have a vocabulary of 30-50 words.

Generally, 2 year olds should string small 2-3 word sentences. Their vocabularies rapidly expand at 2, and by their third birthday they will probably know a few hundred words. Girls are often more verbal than boys, but some children are just talkers, regardless of gender. It is also important to know that children don't say all they know. They usually understand about twice the number of words they will speak, if not more.

Personally, my 2 yr old son speaks in 5-6 word sentences, and my 1 and a half yr daughter speaks in 2-3 word sentences. But we are a very verbal family, and talk about everything.

I have known three year olds that spoke in one word commands, only. And I've met tiny toddler girls that spoke like school age kids. As long as kids are making progress, and learning constantly, they are usually just fine. I hope I've helped answer your questions.

All children are different. They all learn at different speeds. It has a lot to do with what they are exposed to, and what they take from that exposure. Some children are exposed to a higher education, even at age 2, and they still don't catch on - others are not exposed to any form of education, and they can talk circles around some adults I've met! It really depends on the child and his/her environment. Both of my children were talking in multiple sentences by age two. However, I am a stay-home mom, and I've worked with both of my kids on a daily basis since birth! On the other hand, a friend of mine is also a stay-home mom, that works very closely with her child, and he didn't really begin showing signs of a large vocabulary until he was four. I don't really know of any websites because I've never researched this. You might try Google or Yahoo and search for vocabulary development. (May I give a little bit of unsolicited advice?...limit the amount of television and movies you allow your little one to view. Talk and read to your child more than anything! Engage him/her in as much conversation and education as possible. They are sponges at that age!...I'm not against TV, my kids grew up watching and still do!)

my daughter is two, she will be three in June. Her vocabulary is great!! I find that every day she surprises me with the words and sentences she comes up with. it seems that within the last 2 months her vocabulary has just expanded overnight!! However, i've also seen kids her age, maybe a few months older that talk like my 6 year old niece. If you are woried, make an appt with your doctor. I dont know of any sites, just google it

It's so true that all kids are different - and if your doctor isn't worried, you shouldn't be. My son, who is now 5, was very hard to understand when he first started talking, and he didn't say much until after his third birthday. He's doing excellent in school now - it hasn't affected him at all.

My 20 month old daughter is already making simple sentences, like "I see a meow meow" and "there's dada". You never know - so don't panic. The best thing to do is talking a baby/toddler all the time, explain everything in your surroundings, etc. It really helps them develop an understanding of language.

I have a 17 month old and she goes to bed at 8pm and wakes up about 7 or 8 am. She has 2- 1 hour naps during the day too.

Looks like my sweet, energetic 2 year old takes after his mom... I was dubbed "motor mouth" at a very early age.. like mother, like son.. he started to speak even before he turned one.. and now speaks in full sentences.. I used to write in his journal each & every time he conquered a new word or new phrase but I stopped @ 100.... no exaggeration... I am truly proud and love to show him off every now & then but after the hundredth "why did the fish swim over there" or "mama, why can't i go w/ you" or mama i not sweepy" it gets to be a bit much at the end of the day... he talks even in his sleep.. go figure!

He even mastered all the colors, shapes, numbers, and can sing his ABC's... only problem is that he can get frustrated easily - we definitely have to work on that..
I think all our little ones will be chatterboxes at some point in time - mine decided to start his motors a bit early!

Good luck!

Well, my 2 year old has 4 older sisters and 1 younger. And I honestly could not count the words she knows. She has been speaking in paragraphs since she was 18 months old. She can say her alphabet, count to 30, sings all types of songs.

I know it has all to do with her sisters. She had to learn to talk so she can tell them to leave her alone!! lol

My two year old BOY is way behind when my daughter was two (she's four now and doesn't shut up, which is good i guess!) - he only says about maybe 10 words (MAYBE) and I've had MANY people (professionals) tell me that boys are slower. I think as long as they can say about three or so words (fairly clearly) like duck, car...etc then they are on the right path.
Hope that helps!

i have a 2 yr 4 mo old. he doesn't say very much at all. he says the usual, ball, mom, dad, nana, pops, please, no (which is his favorite), out, bath, fish, kitty, deer, buck, and he also says some other words we understand, but a stranger wouldn't. since he understands everything though, i'm not to worried he has anything wrong, he hears just fine, i honestly think he is just not interested in talking yet. he is a shy kid. his dr said we could put him in speech therapy, but i'm giving it till he turns three.
