Florochlorinated hyrdrocarbons were discovered to possess very interesting properties when they were first made.

They were very good insulators. They were gases with low vapor pressures and low boiling points. They were non-toxic.

This led to their use in refrigeration equipment (and air conditioner compressor gas), and propellents (as in hair spray, for example).

Later, it was found out that these gases collected in the ozone layer of our planet (when they escaped our containment) and led to photo chemical reactions that inevitable EAT ozone (destroyed it). That is why it is now banned from use today.

They are not produced in internal combusion engines - EVER.
