1. Don't get so close to your limit that you might go over.

2. Call the company and pay it down and ask to see if the fee can be removed. In many cases, they will work with you.

3. Closing the account will cause you to owe the balance right away, if you're near your limit, it doesn't sound like you can do this.

You are certainly within your rights to close your account if you are unhappy with their service, but, in my experience, all credit card companies charge a fee for going over your limit. Some fees are worse than others. So you company isn't doing anything "shifty" or unusual.

Read your account terms of service. There are a LOT of things you can be charged for.

Actually the best way to solve this is to talk to the credit card company and see if they could waive this. If it is a first time offense usually the company will. so be nice to the company and they will waive it for you. Also you are not the only one living on plastic. Hang on there, if you have a property that has equity the best way is to refinance your property and debt consolidate. After that close all other credit card except two and try not to spend by using cash. or if you spend with credit card make sure that you have the cash to pay it right away.

another case of someone who relies too much on plastic, but never reads the fine print. It's your own fault!
