In most cases the cause is an over active knife and fork. It does cost health services a lot of money. Unfortunately one of the qualities of living in a free country is everybody has the right to mess up their life in any way they choose so banning things is not the answer.

The answer to your first question is YES! Fat should have been banned years ago. I look at fat people being selfish. As a hospital patient it takes more staff to move, them in order to change beds and a longer time to give a bed bath. This takes away needed staff from other patients or requires hiring more staff- more cost.
If EMS, ambulance staff is needed, it takes more crew to prepare, load on a stretcher, carry down stairs and into ambulance. This puts the crew more at risk of back injury plus it takes up more time that could be given on another nearer death patient.
It puts their loved ones with a potential heart breaking decision. If there is a house fire, the loved one has to make a decision of leaving them to die and pulling/carrying out someone else because they are to heavy to move.
As to causes there are many aside from medical causes. Lazy, depression, low self-esteem often caused by traumatic experiences in some points in their lives.

Welfare is not a health-care system, and being overweight has nothing to do with Welfare.
There is no one cause for being overweight.
If you can find a country that doesn't have government-funded health care for some of their citizens, you're free to move there so that you won't have to pay for the "fat" people.

Yes, it does. But so do people who for whatever reason, show up in the emergency room, and do not have an emergency.
So do alcoholics, who rot their livers and brains, and show up with another medical problem, and have to be treated for the alcohoism, too. Many are the patients who go through the DTs while be treated for something else.
So do smokers, who are more prone to respiratory diseases than the general population.
So do people who have a diagnosis of noncompliance with their medical treatments for their chronic ailments, like High blood pressure, diabetes, renal failure, schizophrenia, who fail to take their prescribed meds, or fail to stay on their diets.
And then there are the patients who can not afford their medications, or who do not take them because of the adverse side effects they experience. 100% of the patients who return to the inpatient specialty unit where I work are noncompliant with their medications. We are a 40 bed unit, the average stay there is one week. 100%! Take 40 patients, times the cost of a one week hospital stay, times the number of similar units in th US, and count the billions of dollars, weekly!
So, what is your solution to all of these problems, that are costing us mega trillions of dollars? Ban cigarettes and alcohol, screen ER patients better, no emergency, no admission. And what about the noncompliants? Lock them up permantly and make them follow their diet and take their meds? Beat them when they show up in the hospital? Plan on building facilities for every diabetic, schizophrenic, renal failure, and high blood pressure patient on the planet, I have yet to meet one who did what their doctor told them to do. 32 years in the medical profession.
No one really understands the cause of obesity, why one person gains weight, and another does not. It is not always as simplistic as eating more calories than are burned off. There are other things that factor in, like physical disabilities or illness or conditions that prevent or limit exercise. Diabetes, hypoglycemia, lack of knowledge, even the high cost of a balanced diet can affect weight. Even the lack of time can do this, people that hold down more than one job to make ends meet do not have time to prepare a meal. Medical workers who are so understaffed and overworked they can't find time for a real meal are notorious snackers. Our culture is to blame too. All the fast food, their commercials, availability of junk foods are to blame, too.

I don't think "lazy" is the issue. We are less active, because a great many of us have sedentary jobs that are high stress. Because we have such high levels of stress in our jobs, we don't have the energy or desire to prepare healthy meals so we eat way too much in the way of "easy" foods. Foods like fast food, packaged prepared meals (tv dinners) and so forth. High levels of stress increase cortisol production in the body which encourages the preservation of fat in the body especially in the abdominal region. We need to be teaching people, especially our children better stress management skills.

I am not overweight but I take offense to your question. There are many people out there who work very hard and are still overweight due to genetics. After reading though your list of everything you think we need to ban, heres one more for you....Do we need to ban the amount of time someone spends asking inflammatory questions on yahoo answers when they could be out making a positive difference in the world?

So you think banning, or legislating life is the answer to everything? Freedom is what we stand for. Obesity is a medical problem that kills people, it is not just being lazy, it is not just a matter of will power.

I know a lot of skinny people on welfare, and I know a lot of fat rich people, too. You need to take the time to rethink your views of obesity and health before you start in with ideas such as this.
