I am trying to buy a new comforter for my bed. But I am so confused. What is the difference between down comforters and down-free? Also, which is best? Also, I was interested in getting a duvet....which is best for a duvet cover? Any information would be helpful. Thank you.

With technology now both can be pretty warm. If you have allergies I recommend the down free. Also, no matter how nice a down comforter you purchase the feathers always make their way out and you have that to vacuum up. A duvet is like a large pillow case but the size of your comforter. You use it to protect your comforter so you don't have to wash the comforter as often, you just remove the duvet and wash that. It's a personal choice as to which is better and they are both suited to duvet. Check out www.landsend.com they have a lot of comforters, down and down free items and also helpful info on their site. You might also get a deal in their sale or overstock section since it is nearing the end of season. Hope you find what you like!

Down Free Comforter

A down comforter (duvet) is filled with duck or goose down (basically the really soft, light underfeathers) whereas a down-alternative comforter or duvet is filled with synthetic material that has similar properties to down. Down is extremely warm and very durable but creates allergy problems for a lot of people who must then choose a down free alternative.

Duvets should be covered to protect them and keep them clean and can be purchased in any range of fabrics and colours you can imagine to suit your decor. They are essentially just big bags that fit over your duvet and have a long zipper at one end. Bear in mind that since duvets are very warm already, you may not want your duvet cover to be too heavy a fabric.

Hope this helps.

A real down comforter or coat is filled with duck feathers (down). That is what makes it comfy. So shucks spend the money for the comfort. The alternative is probably fiber filled and will probably eventually ball up get uncomfortable over time.
