You can become an Enrolled Agent. Pass a three part test and you can practice in front of the IRS.

You do not need a license or any special certification in order to prepare tax returns. The people that H&R Block and all the other chains hire during the tax busy season to prepare tax returns are not all certified. However, in order to be able to represent a taxpayer before the IRS or sign forms like the extension forms on behalf of the taxpayer, a prepare must either be a CPA, attorney, or enrolled agent.

Since getting a CPA license in many states require a certain number of audit hours and a certain number of steps, and being an attorney requires law school and passing the BAR exam, many preparers go the route of becoming an enrolled agent, which does not have certain education requirements. Anyone who is willing to pay the fee to the IRS and sit through and pass the exam can become an enrolled agent. Once you are an enrolled agent, there are continuing education requirements that you must meet every three years in order to get your certification renewed. The exam is administered by the IRS annually.

You can go to the IRS website and do a search on "enrolled agent" to find out more.

Take the EA exam from the IRS.

I took it last year.

It really wasn't too bad.
