As already mentioned above, get the lonely planet guide to Thailand. It does give you a decent itinerary for a one-week Thailand tripping.
But to see the BEST from top to bottom of Thailand in a week will mean you won't get to enjoy anything. There are too many things to see in Thailand. And with you travelling on a budget, it will mean you will spend a lot of travelling by bus or train to see them all thus waste valuable time.
One suggestion might be two days in the traditional picturesque north and then three days in the south for beaches, sun and parties, then the last days in Bangkok for sight seeing and shopping just before you leave. This will save carrying around all your goods all over the country.
(to thor_hestnes: I have seen you posted answers in other questions about Thailand. May I ask, are you chronically depressed or something? You might not personally like Thailand but that does not make it a bad place. Lighten up!)

Get a copy of the BOOK "Thailand" Lonely Planet, It has good advice for the first timer to Thailand. the web site is just a smattering of what you will find in the book. YOU ARE IN FOR A WONDERFUL TIME! My advice is not to try to see too many different things and spent several days wherever you go. YOU WILL WANT TO COME BACK.
If you are on a budget don't get sucked into a package "tour". Thailand is really really easy to travel in. The Thai's will do their best to help you.
Where you go Depends on what you want. If you want beaches and full on parties then take the night train to Kho phangan (http://fullmoonparty-thailand.com/). If you want a more laid back beach then give Koh Chang a try by taking a mini-bus that you may be able to catch from the airport.(http://www.ko-chang.info/) If you want Jungle treking take the night train to Chang Mai.
If you are staying in Bangkok try, try try, to get a room at the Atlanta. http://www.theatlantahotel.bizland.com/

Hi, where in Thailand do you want to be in? Different place will have different sights for you and slightly different culture for you to experience. I believe I will be able to help you with an itinerary, if I can know what your interests are. This will help me assist in the travel plan. You can email me at thaitourinfo@yahoo.com for more.
(as for thor_hestnes, why are you living in Thailand when you are telling others to go away? Why not leave Thailand yourself?)

hi, Thailand is a super united states of america to spend your holiday, regrettably lots of the popular islands are "touristed out" there are various islands around the coast from Krabi, and that i'm specific you will come across a gap on the sea coast to calm down. As for me, from Bangkok I leap on the south certain prepare and head for Hua Hin. super place to stay for some days. stable lodging, super nutrition, super evening existence, not too crowded, stable determination of super seashores. in case you have time you will desire to leap on the prepare and bypass north to Chaing Mai, lots to work out and do there yet no sea coast. Have a super holiday.
